The stare from this kitten tells me one thing. I want food, or a bird. Basically, I want something and I'm going to get it. Solid color animals can be difficult to paint. I try to add several colors to bring out the depth and dimensions. Brown was fitting for the background, with a tapered gradient. It bounces off the white exactly like I wanted it to.
